Hull City are set to complete the signing of Akin Famewo, a 26 year old centre-back born in Lewisham, London, and of Nigerian heritage. The former loanee, now a free agent after departing Sheffield Wednesday, is the club’s latest defensive recruit continuing their recruitment from Nigerian-background talents in England.

Famewo progressed through Luton Town’s academy before earning moves via loan spells, including two stints at Charlton Athletic, where he gained valuable Championship experience. His performances attracted interest from multiple clubs, but Hull appear poised to win the race.

This acquisition follows the earlier signing of Nigerian international Semi Ajayi, marking Hull’s deliberate focus on players with strong defensive pedigree and Nigerian connections. Semi Ajayi brings over a decade of experience at West Brom and Rotherham, while Famewo offers youth and solid technical growth potential.

Editorial

We believe Hull City’s recruitment of Akin Famewo demonstrates strategic precision. At a time when signings must deliver impact without hefty fees, adding a free agent with Championship experience and Nigerian roots fits perfectly within the club’s broader framework.

This approach reflects a clear philosophy synergy between players who can adapt quickly and leadership figures who can guide them. Semi Ajayi supplies experience and physical presence Famewo brings youth, agility and familiarity with English football systems. Together they indicate a balanced defensive calibration.

Selecting players with Nigerian heritage adds a cultural dimension: it engages diaspora support and reflects football’s global outlook. For Famewo, this is also a platform to further his career trajectory—something Nigeria’s football hierarchy would likely encourage if he ever considers international allegies with Semi Ajayi.

Hull’s previous signing, Semi Ajayi, also began his career in southeast London and had early spells at Charlton Athletic.
Akin Famewo’s departure from Sheffield Wednesday came as his contract expired in summer 2025, coinciding with Hull’s search for free-agent reinforcements due to a transfer embargo.
Ghana-born defender Reuben Agboola, who played at Charlton in the 1980s, was among the first London-born Nigerians to feature in the English Football League.
